Radon Testing

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that 1 in 16 Tennessee homes have high levels of Radon? Radon is an invisible and odorless gas and can only be detected through testing. Despite being invisible and odorless, Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer just behind nicotine. Radon gas is a naturally occurring byproduct of uranium found in the earth, but can seep in the home through:

• Cracks in the floors/walls
• Construction joints
• Gaps in the floor
• Gaps in service pipes
• Wall cavities
• Water supplies

Radon levels are measured as picocuries per liter of air (pCi/L). We use a CRM (continuous radon monitor) device. Testing is set for a minimal 48-hour period with hourly readings to determine an average radon level over the length of the test. Test results will be provided same-day at end of testing period. Our CRM devices cover up to 2500 sqft and are placed in the lowest living level. One or more additional devices may be recommended for accurate coverage depending on square footage and/or layout of the home/business. Testing is conducted by our environmental specialist adhering to testing standards/protocols set forth by the NRPP (National Radon Proficiency Program)

The EPA has established indoor averages at 1.3 pCi/L with recommendation for corrective action for levels 4.0 or higher. While naturally present in the environment, no level of radon is considered “safe”. Radon levels fluctuate and can be affected by weather patterns and living conditions within a home, therefore, average readings in the 2.0 to 4.0 range, monitoring is recommended with re-testing periodically.
