Radon Testing
Did you know that Middle Tennessee is a hot spot for Radon? Radon is a naturally occurring odorless gas found in many homes nationwide. However, just because radon is invisible and odorless does not mean it is safe. After smoking, radon gas is the number two leading cause of lung cancer.
Radon comes from uranium found in rocks and soil, and while radon levels are highest in winter, it is crucial to take radon seriously year-round. While radon is most often found in the outside air, in some cases, it can build up inside your home. Therefore, our goal for you as a homeowner or business is to have the lowest radon level possible.
Almost 1 out of 15 homes in the United States suffer from elevated radon levels. As home inspectors, we have seen radon invade homes in many ways. The most common way we’ve seen is radon moving through the ground into the air above. This causes radon to seep through the cracks and holes in your home’s foundation. As a result, your home acts as a trap for radon, which will cause the radon levels to rise.

Mold Air Quality Testing
Premier Environmental Services provides various environmental testing options. A mold air quality inspection tests the mold spore levels in and around your home. This inspection can be helpful to prove definitively that mold is growing in a home, especially in unseen areas. Mold is a substance that can not only harm the health of you and your loved ones but can also threaten the structural integrity of the home or building.
Wood is often used as a home’s structural support, and mold and fungus can grow on that wood if continually damp. Wood is a material that can be broken down in nature, so it is susceptible to various methods of decay. Some different types of fungi are attracted to a sugary substance in the wood called cellulose. Fungi will eat away at the cellulose in the wood, leaving you with weak and decaying lumber.
Aside from the effects mold and fungus can have on your home, they can also harm your health. Excessive mold spores in enclosed areas have been known to irritate the respiratory system. Mold spores can also exacerbate asthma and allergy symptoms.
But wouldn’t you be able to tell if you had a mold problem?
Indeed, mold can often be found through visual inspection. However, there are also cases where mold can be hidden from view. For example, if you have a leaky or broken shower liner or a drip under the home that you don’t know about, you could be faced with an abundance of mold and mold spores.

Lead-Based Paint
Some buyers prefer older homes over new builds because of their charm and uniqueness. From architecture to lot size, there are many plusses when considering the purchase of a home built before the 1970s. However, as technology has progressed, we know more about homebuilding and materials than builders did 50 years ago. While materials like lead-based paint used to be common in houses, they are not found in new homes today.
Lead-based paint was commonly used in homes before the 1970s. However, using lead-based paint is not allowed today because of the health reactions it can cause. If disturbed, lead-based paint can contribute to respiratory irritation, among other symptoms.
Our team of experienced inspectors has the tools available to test paint for lead and may be able to provide recommendations for mitigation if tests are positive.
